The narrator decides to read a book to pass the time. The familys incestuous tradition has for many years been the main reason for the slow decline of the family lineage. Rodrick can feel that something is wrong and can’t sleep one night, neither can the narrator. In result of this, they decide to bury her under the house so she would not be tested on by doctors. They notice she has rosy cheeks, which is a sign of death. The narrator tries to cheer his friend up in many ways. The disease causes her to lose control of her limbs. He finds out that Rodrick is very mentally ill, which the readers understand to be mostly caused by fear. The fear is caused by his twin sister, Madeline, who is suffering from the disease. The narrator observes the very old, creepy house, in which he explains in vivid details that create the overall mood and scene of the story. From this rare letter, the narrator headed by horse back across the country to meet Roderick. He was invited there by a peculiar letter he got in the mail. The only two left in the Usher family line is twins, Roderick and Madeline Usher.The narrator is an old time, childhood best friend of Roderick.
